MEETING PLACE: Trailhead parking lot. There is a large circular water reservoir adjacent to the parking lot.

ELEVATION GAIN: about 100 ft.


HIKING TIME (moving time): about 1 hour


HIKE DIFFICULTY RANGE: Easy


HIKE DESCRIPTION: High Chaparral Open Space is the highest point in eastern Colorado Springs at 6800 feet and is characterized by a prominent ridge line vegetated with scrub oak mixed with prairie grass. Views from the crest of the ridge include the Spanish Peaks and the Wet Mountains to the south, the Black Forest to the north, and an uninterrupted view of Colorado Springs to the west. We will be hiking the Prairie Loop Trail.


HIKER PREPARATION/EQUIPMENT: The terrain is a fairly flat gravel path. Bring water.


DRIVING DIRECTIONS TO TRAILHEAD: from I 25, take exit 146 and drive east on Garden of the Gods Rd., which becomes Austin Bluffs Pkwy for about 6.8 miles. Turn right on Stetson Hills and proceed .4 miles east. Near the top of the hill looked for the high chaparral sign on your right and turn into the parking lot.
